“I don’t believe in God.”

“I don’t believe in God.”

What do you say to a child who says this any time you mention God? I met this fourth-grade boy while helping teach a Good News Club® at one of the schools here in Chicago. As the weeks went by, his statement of “I don’t believe in God” turned into questions like “who is God?” and “how do you know?” The other teachers and I did our best to answer all the questions he had as well as the myriad questions coming from all of the other children.

One week, I had the privilege of teaching the Bible lesson and giving the children a chance to respond to the Gospel. At the end of the Bible lesson, a group of children approached me to talk more about receiving salvation. This young man was in the group. One by one I answered the children’s questions and asked them questions to see how much of the Gospel they understood. When I got to this boy, I asked him if he wanted to believe in Jesus. “No,” he answered immediately—”I don’t need to, because I already decided to believe.” I was stunned—when did this child who didn’t think God existed decide to give his life to Him? As it turned out, over the course of that club, the boy had realized that God truly did exist and that Jesus could save him. It was amazing to see the results from the work that God had been doing in this child’s life,
